What are the main categories of orthopedic implants?

Orthopedic implants are one of the important sub-segments of high-value consumables. According to the different parts of use or purposes, they are mainly divided into the following categories:

1. Trauma
Trauma orthopedic devices are mainly used to treat pathological and traumatic fractures in the pelvis, hip, hand and ankle of the upper and lower limbs of the human body. According to the different internal fixation methods, they can be divided into internal fixation and external fixation. Internal fixation mainly includes steel plates, screws, intramedullary nails, etc., while external fixation mainly includes external fixators, etc. The production technology of trauma implants is relatively mature, the market development is relatively sufficient, and the localization rate is high.

2. Spinal
Spinal orthopedic implants are mainly used to treat spinal diseases caused by trauma, degeneration, deformity or other pathological reasons, such as degenerative spinal diseases, spinal trauma and tumor spinal deformity. The technical barriers of spinal implants are relatively high, the research and development is difficult, and the surgical skills of doctors are required to be high. Therefore, in the market, the localization rate of spinal implants is relatively low, and the market share is occupied by foreign leading companies.

3. Joints
Orthopedic implants mainly include various types of artificial joint prostheses, among which hip and knee joints are the two most widely used types. The research and development threshold of joint implants is high, the production process is complex, and there are high requirements for material stability and biocompatibility. Therefore, it is difficult for joint implants to enter the market, and the domestic substitution rate is relatively low. However, with the improvement of the technical level and production capacity of domestic enterprises and the support of national policies, the market share of domestic joint implants is gradually increasing.

4. Other categories (such as ankles)
In addition to the above three major types of orthopedic implants, there are some other types of orthopedic implants, such as ankles. Ankle orthopedic implants are an emerging field in recent years. With the development of medical device companies and the application of new technologies, the types and quantities of ankle implants are also increasing.

In summary, orthopedic implants are mainly divided into four categories according to the different parts of use or uses: trauma, spine, joints, and other categories (such as ankles). The use of these implants has solved many clinical technical problems and improved the treatment level of orthopedic diseases.
